Research interests
Dr. Zelle’s main research interests include the study of healthcare disparities, social determinants of health, and malnutrition in orthopaedic trauma patients. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed scientific journal manuscripts and presented his research at numerous national and international conferences. He has also received several million dollars in extramural research funding from foundations, philanthropic organizationsy, industry sponsors, and the Department of Defense (DoD). Dr. Zelle has also served as site-PI in several multicenter randomized controlled trials, bringing innovation to the bedsideclinic.
During his tenure at UT Health San Antonio, Dr. Zelle served as Vice-Chair of Research and was able to significantly grow the basic science and clinical research operation within the orthopaedic department. In his approach to research, Dr. Zelle cultivates teamwork, interdisciplinary and multicenter collaborations, innovation, and quality improvement. The impact of Dr. Zelle’s research has also received national and international recognition through different awards including the 2022 Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) DEI and Health Disparities Research Award as well as the prestigious 2024 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Diversity Award.
