Description

Study Purpose: The overall objective is to assess sources (eg., their doctors or social media) and outcomes (eg., decision making and health behaviors) of patient-centered communications among cancer survivors within primary care systems.

Study Design: This is a mixed method study using both quantitative and qualitative data to assess sources and outcomes of patient-centered communications.

Subjects and Setting:
  • Setting: Family Medicine at University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX
  • Quantitative 2022 HINTS which is publicly available online
  • Qualitative Interviews of 30 cancer survivors (15 male and 15 female adults aged 18+)
Outcome Measures:
  • Experience of communicating with care team, informal caregivers, and peers
  • Level of trust in provider, informal caregiver or family member, scientist or researcher, healthy system, social media, and government
  • Decision of using any complementary or alternative medicine or attending self management programs.
