Texas Two Step: Does a two step model of blood pressure screening impact identification of athletes with hypertension

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Study Purpose: o Identify student athletes with hypertension who may benefit from further evaluation. • Study Design: o Observational Study; Variables to be collected: age, gender, height (inches), weight (pounds), systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure. • Subjects and Setting: o All student athletes participating in the designated mass participation sports physicals. Based on previous sports physicals, we hope to include all the athletes who participated in sports physicals. o Based on last academic year, we had 322 athletes at Ball High School, 152 athletes at La Marque High School, and 330 athletes at Texas City High School. o There were a total of 804 student athletes we saw for sports physicals this past academic year (2022-2023). • Intervention (if any): o Automatic Single Blood Pressure Measurement compared to a repeat manual blood pressure for athletes identified as hypertensive at initial measurement. • Outcome Measures: o Identification of athletes who would benefit from further evaluation of elevated blood pressure.
