Abstract
In disagreement with Benes and Lange, non-randomness of the nervous system does not preclude stereological methods in general or the optical disector in particular. In agreement with Benes and Lange, sampling in histological material is non-trivial. Also in agreement with Benes and Lange, there might be occasions where 2-D methods would be useful, but all requirements of these methods must be met, and as a final comment, this might be more time-consuming than a stereological estimate.
