Geriatric Eustachian tube dysfunction

Otologic complaints are a common reason for the elderly to present to an otolaryngologist. Eustachian tube dysfunction in the geriatric population is a common yet poorly researched and described problem. A thorough understanding of the underlying anatomy and pathophysiology, performance of a careful history and work up, and a sound understanding of the available medical and surgical treatments are vital in the management of Eustachian tube dysfunction in these patients. Here we review the literature regarding the work up and treatment of geriatric patients with Eustachian tube dysfunction. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of literature specific to the geriatric population relative to Eustachian tube dysfunction and further research in the area is needed.
