Human Adenovirus Vaccines

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Adenoviruses are a common cause of respiratory disease and occasionally cause epidemics among children, the immunocompromised, and confined human populations. Among the more than 100 adenovirus types described, US Food and Drug Administration-approved vaccines against human adenovirus types 4 and 7 are available but indicated only for military trainees which have historically suffered large epidemics from these strains. These live oral vaccines are administered together and shown to be very immunogenic, effective, and safe. Numerous other adenovirus-based vaccine constructs have been developed or are being developed for other viral infections, including most recently against SARS-CoV-2.
