Abstract
The interventional radiologist may be called upon to play a significant role in managing several obstetric and non-obstetric conditions during pregnancy. These interventions range from obtaining vascular access to managing acute infections, performing temporizing procedures to allow definitive surgical management after delivery, and in some cases, managing life-threatening and fertility threatening conditions. When consulted to perform a procedure during pregnancy, the interventional radiologist should be expected to establish the medical necessity for the ordered procedure with both the ordering clinician and the obstetrician. The depth of sedation and type of anesthesia should be tailored to the procedure, bearing in mind the increased risk of aspiration in pregnancy. Pregnancy predisposes a patient to a thromboembolic phenomenon due to physiologic hypercoagulability and venous stasis from the mass effect of the uterus. Vascular malformations may exhibit rapid growth and become more symptomatic during pregnancy.
