Abstract
This chapter will introduce the reader to the issue of abuse against women with disabilities as an example of occupational injustice. This particular area of research was explored because of the authors, mutual passion regarding the empowerment of women and the consideration of environmental influences that support or hinder the empowerment of women. Through personal knowledge and the experience of treating women and children with disabilities who have experienced abuse, these authors noted that the environmental influence of abuse hindered the ability of these clients to participate in meaningful and purposeful occupation of play, work, home care, and social engagement. However, the authors felt strongly that additional research and consideration of the influence of abuse on women with disabilities was necessary to fully inform themselves and occupational therapists of the issues and potential interventions.
