Several identical virus strains were isolated from pools of mosquitoes collected from November 1978 to January 1979 in the eastern part of Madagascar, in a tropical primary rain forest area. Electronic microscopy showed this virus to have a rhabdovirus morphology. The virus could be serologically related only to some viruses of the vesicular stomatitis group. This is the first new probable arbovirus isolated in Madagascar. Its name, Périnet, is the name of the area from which it was isolated.
