Lesion Procedures for Psychiatric Disorders

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter focuses on modern lesion procedures for psychiatric disorders. Throughout the chapter, we focus on two aspects which support a clear understanding of the benefits and outcomes of such approaches: the use of advanced neuroimaging, use of modern symptom scales for assessing outcome. We discuss the development of modern stereotactic techniques used to deliver focal tissue ablation in a minimally-invasive fashion, as well as the historical context and early development of the canonical procedures to treat psychiatric disorders. Next, we examine the literature on two of the most common psychiatric indications for lesion procedures: obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and depression. Finally, we discuss other psychiatric disorders that have been treated with lesion procedures.
