Abstract
A trauma patient presenting with a potential carotid artery injury epitomizes one of the most critical scenarios in medical practice in general, necessitating a judicious and timely decision-making process followed by the appropriate course of action under significant time constraints. While confirmed carotid injuries may be infrequent, the potential for death or permanent neurologic deficit makes careful evaluation and prompt treatment imperative. Whether caused by a gunshot, a rollover motor vehicle accident, or an iatrogenic injury with a central line kit, an injury that is diagnosed quickly can usually be treated successfully with minimal morbidity. On the contrary, an injury which is identified later, after the development of neurologic complications, is likely to become a clinical and medico-legal catastrophe.
