Abstract
The field of metabolism covers a broad and diverse range of biochemical processes that attempt to maintain homeostasis in the face of stress. Given the intensity of surgical stress, an understanding of how surgery, critical illness, nutrition, and metabolism interact to influence clinical outcomes is of benefit to the surgeon.
