Abstract

The external genital anatomy was examined and photographed in seven pairs of twins, including three identical sets, and one set of triplets to determine if the hymen's appearance is genetically determined. One hundred percent of identical twin sisters and 50% of nonidentical sisters had the same hymenal configuration. Clefts, external ridges, and tags frequently occurred in the same location on the rim in siblings. The authors conclude that the hymen's morphology may be partially genetically determined.
