New blood substitutes: Physiology and clinical impact

Several synthetic oxygen carrier solutions are under advanced commercial development. These solutions all have unique physiological effects that suggest a clinical use with both limitations and novel use. We review some of the physical and biologic properties of these new blood substitutes.
