Abstract
Oxidative stress is the abnormal consequence of endogenous antioxidant defense mechanism leading to the development of various harmful diseases and pathological complications. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated due to metabolic processes are primarily the major triggering factors responsible for cellular oxidative stress. Though ROS is essential for the biochemical episodes in the physiological system, an elevated level of ROS can accelerate the pathological events in the multiple vital organs through various molecular mechanisms like endogenous antioxidant depletion, apoptosis, inflammation, autophagy, etc. Plant-based phytochemicals are best known for their strong antioxidant properties in the human body consumed as food, therapeutics, and nutraceuticals. Antioxidants derived from plant sources or phytoantioxidants play a pivotal role in the prevention and management of various oxidative stress-induced diseases like metabolic syndrome. However, continuous research and development in terms of the molecular mechanisms and safety of the plant-based antioxidants are necessary to establish them as therapeutics to treat various ailments.
