Preoperative workup of oral cavity cancer

Abstract

In 2020, there were 377,713 new cases of oral cavity Oral cavity cancer preoperative workup and lip squamous cell carcinoma in the United States. Oral cancer is the 16th most common cancer in the United States, with ~11,230 deaths per year. In 2022, the 5-year relative survival rate is ~68%; early identification and management of head and neck pathology are imperative for improving survival outcomes. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are uniquely positioned, in collaboration with other dental colleagues, to identify and manage oral cancer. The purpose of this chapter is to review the preoperative workup for oral cavity cancer.
