Abstract

When young male rats are subjected to low protein diet (2.7 g%) the function of the thyroid gland is depressed as evidenced by decreased ¹³¹I uptake and content of the thyroid gland. When these rats are fed with an enriched-cholesterol diet there are manifestations of the thyroid gland, stimulation as demonstrated by increased TSH serum levels. It is possible to postulate that the low function of the thyroid gland in protein deficient states could be due to a reduced stimulation of the gland.
