Abstract

Several of the most important human arboviral pathogens, including yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika viruses, originated in enzootic African trans mission cycles involving Aedes mosquito vectors and nonhuman primate amplifica tion hosts. Since 1970, longitudinal studies of enzootic circulation and spillover infections of people by these viruses have been undertaken by Institut Pasteur de Dakar scientists and collaborators working in southeastern Senegal. This work, which informs much of our knowledge of the origins, evolution, and enzootic main tenance of Zika virus, is reviewed here.
